HASTINGS — Bennington Post 266 sent 14 batters to the plate during a 10-run third inning and defeated Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes Post 11, 11-3, in six innings Saturday night in Game 4 of the Nebraska American Legion Class A Juniors State Tournament at Duncan Field.

Hastings took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second. Ian Waechter-Cass singled and scored on Luke Nollette’s RBI single before Enrique Chavez-Gutierrez came home on a sacrifice fly by Charles Ratzlaff.

Bennington responded with its decisive rally in the third, collecting six hits and taking advantage of several Hastings defensive miscues. Quinn Roberts and Chase Dean delivered consecutive RBI singles before Roberts scored on a wild pitch. Greg Kriegler added a run-scoring single, and Tyler Meschede later cleared the bases with a three-run triple that extended the lead to 8-2.

Meschede scored on Dean’s second RBI single of the inning before Roberts stole home to complete the 10-run outburst and give Bennington a 10-2 advantage.

Hastings scored its final run in the fifth when courtesy runner Cole Cooper came home during Cooper Larson’s fielder’s choice. Bennington answered in the sixth after Connor Crouch doubled and scored on a Hastings error.

Derek King went the distance for Bennington, allowing three runs on eight hits over six innings. He walked three, struck out one and benefited from a defense that turned two double plays. Quinn Simmons took the loss for Hastings.

Meschede led Bennington by going 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and three RBIs. Roberts finished 2-for-2 with two walks, two runs and an RBI, while Dean went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Crouch recorded Bennington’s other extra-base hit with a sixth-inning double.

Jaxon Brooks went 2-for-2 for Hastings. Waechter-Cass and Nollette each finished 2-for-3, with Nollette driving in one run.

Bennington finished with 11 runs on nine hits and committed three errors. Hastings recorded three runs on eight hits and committed six errors.
