HASTINGS — Papillion Post 32 scored six runs before recording an out in the first inning and eliminated Kearney Pinnacle Bank Post 52 with an 11-2 victory in five innings Sunday morning in Game 5 of the Nebraska American Legion Class A Juniors State Tournament at Duncan Field.

Kearney threatened first by loading the bases with three consecutive one-out singles in the top of the first. Papillion starter Landon Roarty escaped without allowing a run, recording a strikeout before inducing an inning-ending popout.

Papillion immediately took control in the bottom half. Braden Waddell walked and Cooper Winther singled before Waddell scored when Braden Ostlund reached on an error. Vinnie Armstrong walked to load the bases, and Gavin Wolf followed with a two-run double. Owen Hylok added an RBI single before Max Sullivan drove home two more runs with a single, giving Papillion a 6-0 advantage.

Hagan Gates doubled and scored when Sawyer Bruner reached on an error in the second, putting Kearney on the board. Papillion answered when Armstrong scored on a throwing error, then extended its lead to 8-1 on Waddell’s RBI single in the third.

Kearney loaded the bases with no outs in the fourth and scored on Kellen Jones’ walk, but Waddell limited the damage by striking out Parker Mentzer and inducing an inning-ending double play.

Papillion put the game away with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Winther opened the inning with a triple and scored on Ostlund’s single. Wolf added an RBI single, and Armstrong later scored on AJ Arens’ single to make it 11-2.

Waddell earned the victory after replacing Roarty to begin the third inning. He allowed one run on two hits, walked three and struck out two over three innings. Mentzer took the loss after being charged with six first-inning runs.

Winther went 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs, while Wolf finished 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Sullivan added two hits and two RBIs, and Armstrong walked three times and scored three runs. Max Ondrak led Kearney by going 2-for-3, while Gates doubled and scored.

Papillion finished with 11 runs, 10 hits and two errors. Kearney recorded two runs, seven hits and two errors.
