HASTINGS — Hastings Johnson Imperial Homes Post 11 scored nine runs in the second inning and held off a seventh-inning comeback by Gretna East Post 216 for a 14-11 victory Sunday in Game 6 of the Nebraska American Legion Class A Juniors State Tournament at Duncan Field.

Gretna grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning. Kyan Morlan scored during Gavin Visser’s plate appearance, and Cale Fagin came home on Visser’s sacrifice fly. Hastings answered in the bottom half when Cooper Larson delivered a two-run double.

Hastings broke the game open with nine runs in the second. Enrique Chavez-Gutierrez singled and Timothy Hajek was hit by a pitch before both scored during a sacrifice-bunt play. Larson added a two-run single, Quinn Simmons and Larson scored on consecutive bases-loaded hit batters, and Issac Luksan came home on an error. Charles Ratzlaff capped the inning with a two-run single that gave Hastings an 11-2 lead.

Gretna cut into the deficit with three runs in the third. Landon Heinert and Evan Wiley delivered RBI singles before Heinert scored on a balk. Morlan scored on an error and Cale Chilvers came home on another balk in the fourth, trimming Hastings’ lead to 11-7.

Hastings answered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth. Hajek scored when Jaxon Brooks was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, and two more runs crossed on an error to extend the lead to 14-7.

Gretna mounted one final rally in the seventh. Wes Turner drove in a run with a double, while Paxton Havlovic and Morlan added RBI singles. Charles Ratzlaff entered with the bases loaded and one out, walked Fagin to force home a run and then recorded consecutive strikeouts to end the game and earn the save.

Ian Waechter-Cass earned the victory after allowing seven runs on seven hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out three. Garrett Wegener took the loss for Gretna.

Larson led Hastings by going 2-for-4 with a double and four RBIs. Simmons went 1-for-2 with two walks and two runs, while Hajek was hit by three pitches and scored three times.

Fagin paced Gretna by going 3-for-4 with a walk, two runs and an RBI. Havlovic finished 3-for-4 with an RBI, Wiley went 2-for-4 with a run and an RBI, and Turner doubled, scored and drove in a run.

Hastings finished with 14 runs, six hits and two errors. Gretna recorded 11 runs, 14 hits and four errors. Larson and Turner had the game’s only extra-base hits, with each collecting a double.
